Brew, Sip, Repeat: Three Sustainable Solutions for Used Coffee Grounds

At Mhor Coffee, sustainability is part of our daily grind so we thought we’d share some of our top tips with you.

The coffee industry has come a long way in reducing its environmental footprint, thanks to the growing awareness among both roasters and customers. But it doesn’t have to stop there.

Your spent coffee grounds still have a lot to offer. So, before you toss them in the bin, try one of these planet-friendly, practical ways to repurpose your morning ritual.

Feed Your Flora

Plant lovers, this one’s for you. Coffee grounds are a natural, nutrient-rich addition to your soil mix. Packed with nitrogen and other minerals, they help boost plant health and improve soil structure.

Just mix a tablespoon of used grounds into the soil around your houseplants, garden beds, or even balcony pots. Bonus: it can help keep pests like slugs at bay. Your monstera will thank you.

Compost, Elevated

Got a compost bin or a worm farm? Coffee grounds make a superb “green” material to balance out food scraps and garden waste. They help accelerate decomposition and enrich the final product—creating nutrient-dense compost for thriving plants.

Sprinkle your used grounds into the heap (filter included if it’s unbleached paper) and let the microbes do their thing.

DIY Skincare That Doesn’t Cost the Earth

Self-care has evolved, and so have our beauty routines. Coffee grounds make a brilliant base for natural exfoliation. Their fine texture sloughs off dead skin cells, while antioxidants give your skin a little love.

Try this easy scrub:

  • 2 teaspoons used coffee grounds (fine grind is best)
  • 1 tablespoon olive or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey or agave

Mix, apply in gentle circles, rinse, and glow. Use once or twice a week and store leftovers in a sealed jar in the fridge.

Small Changes, Big Impact

There are dozens of creative ways to reuse your coffee grounds, from natural odour neutralisers to homemade cleaning scrubs. But even just one change can keep waste out of landfill and give something back to Mother Earth. Happy brewing. And if you’re low on beans, you can shop our coffees online here.
